Myesis at Ilissos River

Oil on tracing paper

Myesis at Ilissos River perfectly encapsulates the sense of uncanny which underlies Ruby Swinney’s work. The ambiguous direction of the water’s flow and the gathering of people conveys a sense of wandering upon a mysterious ritual or ceremony. The majority of the participants face away from the viewer, furthering the sense of being an outsider. Despite this, there is a sense of celebration. Much of Swinney’s work deals with a crisis of faith that stems from living in a vanishing natural world, the lighter palette here conveys a sense of rapturous reconnection with what was lost.
