I wish you well
Cameron Platter
A recurring theme in Cameron Platter’s work has been his extended engagement with printmaker John Muafangejo. Platter often utilises a graphic style reminiscent of Muafangejo’s woodcuts, albeit adding a slew of contemporary logos and locations that speak to the social realities of South Africa today. In I Wish You Well, Platter juxtaposes a Muafangejo-esque figure with text that recalls the curious flyers one tends to receive in South African city centres promising miracle cures for a variety of outlandish ailments. Cameron highlights the absurdity of these by imagining an enigmatic ‘Dr Phill’ who blesses the viewer while shooting colourful beams from his eyes. A cell phone number is provided in case further blessings are required (no doubt for a fee).
