Ka Masa
Colbert Mashile
2004
-
Drypoint Monotype Spitbite
‘Ka Masa’ exemplifies Mashile’s earlier work. There is a sombre feel to the piece deriving from the sepia-tinged landscape that the artist presents. Much of Mashile’s work at the time explored the relationship between the collective and individual: what it means to be a part of a culture with history and customs while also being an individual who experiences these things subjectively. A winding queue of people emerges from one of Mashile’s idiosyncratic horned structures, their hanging heads suggesting a weight collectively carried. Perched on the edge of a precipice, the figure at the front appears to be taking a moment of reflection, reconsidering the present trajectory.
