Julia Rosa Clark is a multifaceted artist and educator based in Cape Town. She is recognised for her complex installations which combine sculpture, found objects, and methodical arrangements of paper cut-outs to reflect on systems of information, excess, and cultural consumption. Colour is frequently a guiding principle in the production of her works. Clark’s cutting parties – where a veritable army of willing volunteers gathered to cut out images en masse – were the stuff of legend. She is currently the Programme Coordinator for Contemporary Art at the Cape Town Creative Academy.

‍Gimme Gimme Gimme Volcano, one of the artist’s signature works, derives from Julia Rosa Clark’s 2005 exhibition ‘A Million Trillion Gazillion’, which sought to navigate a sense of information overload by looking at how knowledge systems claim to represent and interpret the world, and the exclusions this inevitably creates. There is a central tension of simplicity vs complexity in the piece: seen from afar as a cross-section representation of a volcanic eruption, and close-up as an overwhelming explosion of the detritus of late-capitalism.
