Mack Magagane’s ‘… in this city’ series marked the point where the artist shifted from taking his photographs atop rooftops on a tripod, and instead braved the city on foot at street level. Consequently, there is an immediacy and vulnerability to the works, but also a sense of being part of the city rather than an outsider looking in. Magagane captures small moments, elusive and intimate, which create vignettes around those who occupy Johannesburg’s inner city.
