Consequently, absences are a recurring theme in Ian Grose’s work. In Passage II (for BJA), an unoccupied seascape garners an undercurrent of tragedy when combined with the work’s title. The titular BJA alludes to Dutch conceptual and performance artist Bas Jan Ader, who famously disappeared while attempting to cross the Atlantic Ocean from America to England in a thirteen-foot sailboat.
