SPOTLIGHTING OUR PEOPLE | Mafedi Lenake

We sat down with Designer Intern, Mafedi Lenake for a Q&A session to get to know her a little better, what's on her bucket list and what she thinks about pineapple on pizza.
Q: THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE YOU BEST?

A: Animated. Thinker. Fearless

Q: WHAT IS ONE THING THAT PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU?

A: It takes me a good hour or two to defrost after I wake up. This usually means I can’t and won’t utter any words, nothing makes sense, and I find nothing impressive or entertaining enough for me to comment on but in the event I do, we can talk about it later… nothing is ever that serious.

Q: THREE THINGS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?

A: Release an EP by mid-2024, learn Spanish and get a Drone License.

Q: WHAT WOULD’VE YOU LIKED TO INVENT FROM ALL THE COOL INVENTIONS THAT EXIST?

A: A camera. Something about being able to make a moment last forever through a lens speaks to me so much.

Q: TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR TATTOO? (THE ONE ON YOUR ARM IN THE PICTURES YOU TOOK)

A: My tattoo is the first on my right arm and the start of a travel inspired sleeve. I got a stamp with a casket and SA on it to remind myself that, no matter where I go, to never forget where I come from and to always come back home - where the heart belongs. As much as I want to explore other countries, my final resting place has to be here.

"Optimism empowers us to see challenges as opportunities, setbacks as temporary hurdles, and the future as brimming with possibilities."

Q: IF YOU WEREN’T IN ADVERTISING, WHERE WOULD YOU BE?

A: Making music full-time or better yet, getting some sleep.

Q: PINEAPPLE ON PIZZA: YES OR NO AND WHY?

A: Immediately no. Who thought that was a good idea? It is one of the most unnecessary things on Earth and I think people who eat pineapple on pizza are going to eat us one day. Don’t say I didn’t call it.

Q: IF YOU WERE A GENRE OF MUSIC, WHICH ONE WOULD YOU BE AND WHY?

A: Reggae. By definition, Reggae combines native styles with elements of rock and soul music, and is performed at moderate tempos with the accent on the offbeat. I feel like my rhythm as a person is very much like that. I imagine choosing Reggae as my symbolic musical genre highlights the embodiment of its profound ability to fuse rhythm, soul, and social consciousness into a harmonious blend of positivity and unity. To be Reggae is to stand for the timeless messages of love, peace, and justice, echoing the rhythm of a heartbeat that transcends boundaries. It symbolises an unwavering commitment to resilience in the face of adversity, a profound connection to the roots of culture and spirituality, and a celebration of life's simple joys.

Q: WHICH ONE OF OUR VALUES RESONATES WITH YOU THE MOST AND WHY?

A: OPTIMISITIC. Optimism empowers us to see challenges as opportunities, setbacks as temporary hurdles, and the future as brimming with possibilities. It fuels resilience, fosters a positive outlook, and motivates us to persevere through adversity. Moreover, optimism is contagious, uplifting those around us and fostering a more optimistic and supportive community. It's a mindset that not only enhances our overall well-being but also enables us to approach life with enthusiasm and the belief that, no matter the circumstances, a brighter future is always within reach.
